Saw "Crazy Heart" last night: lot of parallels to "The Wrestler:" broken do=
wn, self-destructive entertainer trying to hang on, reconnect with children=
he's let down, and find salvation in that one fulfilling mid/late life rel=
ationship. Jeff Bridges was excellent, doing a good job losing himself in "=
Bad" Blake. The relationship here with Maggie Gylenhall was the usual suspe=
ct movie set-up (she's about my daughter's age or slightly older and Bridge=
s is about my age, or slightly younger).
She was quite good, too.
In terms of broken-down reputations, I got an email forwarded by my ex-wife=
the other day about Mel Gibson and "The Edge of Darkness" It was a rehash =
of Mel's recent past: his stewardship of "The Passion of the Christ," bring=
ing up the old questions of whether or not it was anti-Semitic, his father'=
s Holocaust denial and of course, his famed comments during the drunken dri=
ving arrest. It urged me to forward it to "every Jewish person I knew" remi=
nding them to boycott the new movie. My response was that while I personall=
y will never support any film project that Mel is connected to again, any a=
ttempt at an organized boycott is counterproductive in the extreme, most li=
kely resulting in more publicity and higher box office, as did the ADL furo=
r over TPotC, which not only dramatically increased its box office appeal b=
ut added to its legitimacy as an artistic work under attack. I do not belie=
ve in boycotts and hate the paranoia of seeing the world through Jew-colore=
d glasses. People should make up their own minds and anyone who has forgott=
en the anti-Semitic rant during his arrest has a real short memory. Mel als=
o took a real rip at a critic who asked him about this during a recent inte=
rview, saying the remarks were "alleged" and then asking his questioner, wh=
ose surname was Rubin, if he "had a dog in the hunt." Very conciliatory.
And finally, in the personal breakdown department, I decided to work out on=
my home treadmill instead of the elliptical the other day. I set it at a =
sedate 4.0 (running is a thing of my past) and sallied forth. Within a min=
ute or two, I felt a pulling in my thigh, which I cleverly ignored for ten =
minutes until it became intense. I had done this speed before with no troub=
le but this day was different. Tweaked a hamstring. to go with the plantar =
fascitis I've been fighting with for months. Running out of icebags to use.=
Getting old(er) sucks, but of course the alternative is considerably less =
attractive.

I saw Gatz in November 2008 when it was performed at RPI's new arts center =
in Troy. It should not be missed. Despite the NY Times' headline, you do =
not need stamina to watch Gatz. It is so engrossing and well done that you=
never even notice that you've been in a theater for over 6 hours. I can't=
wait to see it again in the fall.

Here now is my favorite album of all time, Frank Sinatra's 1956 masterpiece,
"Songs For Swingin' Lovers." It was arranged and conducted by the genius
Nelson Riddle. As with "Wee Small Hours," alcohol should enhance the
experience for you.

When you get there, click "Play All."

You may listen to the whole album or individual songs from it as many times
as you wish and legally, too.

Thanks, Scott. Glad to see he acknowledged Kate McGarrigle, who taught him =
how to frail a banjo. His current wife, Rita, went to my high school and wa=
s in my sister's class.

And for fans of the Wainwrights and McGarrigles who get Sundance, I recomme=
nd the documentary "Rufus Wainwright: Prima Donna." Several scenes with eac=
h of his parents, including some nice ones of Rufus and Kate together. It a=
irs next on the 22nd.

Wow, I am so out of it these days that I didn't realize that FUV finally so=
lved their antenna situation. I found out because I was listening to Vin in=
my car and the show was sounding so good (Jack Grace Band, Ted Hawkins doi=
ng Biloxi, and improbably enough Elton John) that when I got home I put WFU=
V on the stereo, and instead of trying to fiddle away the static and eventu=
ally giving up - it sounds great!=20

Then I go to the website because he played a song earlier right after a Luc=
inda Williams and before a Freedy song that sounded like Laura Cantrall but=
I'm not sure and so I'm hoping for a playlist because I missed his announc=
ing of the set, and what do I see but an announcement about the new antenna=
. It sounds great by the way!

So was it Laura?=20
